When we build or look after a Joomla site, a small set of trusted tools shows up again and again. Think of this as the short list we would pack first: an editor that makes daily updates pleasant, a way to keep search basics tidy, sharing previews that look right, a form builder people can actually finish, control over where modules appear, steady security help, a way to stay in touch by email, a store when selling starts, member profiles when community matters, and a design framework that lets content do more. None of this replaces good hosting, regular updates, and tested backups. It just makes the day-to-day work cleaner.
JCE Editor
If you only add one thing to make editing easier, make it JCE. It gives you a familiar word-processor style editor, cleaner handling of links, images, and media, and profiles you can tailor for different users. Our clients tend to update their own pages more often when the editor feels this comfortable, and that is a win for everyone.
RSSEO by RSJoomla
The 2013 list pointed readers to a sitemap tool that has since retired, and RSSEO is the grown-up answer we reach for on client work. It brings the crawler, page titles and descriptions, canonical cleanup, redirects, error pages, and XML and HTML sitemaps together in one place, so search basics do not sprawl across five different tools. A tidy sitemap you can submit to Google Search Console is still part of good housekeeping, and RSSEO makes that routine much easier to keep up with.
TAGZ by roosterz.nl
Search tidy is only half the job; a page should also look right when someone shares it. TAGZ adds the Open Graph and X Card details that tell Facebook, X, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, and similar services which title, description, and image to show, instead of leaving them to guess. It can pull those details from the article, let you adjust them by hand, and fall back to a default image when a page has none. It is a small tool, but it saves that familiar moment of sharing a link and seeing the wrong picture appear.
RSForm! Pro by RSJoomla
Every site eventually needs a form that does a little more than name, email, and message. RSForm! Pro is our form builder pick because it handles simple contact forms and longer multi-page forms in the same place, with conditional fields, calculations, and clear submission records. We know it from our own build work: it is the tool behind the contact form on our staging site, so we see the same editing screens our clients will use. When a form needs to ask a follow-up question only some visitors should see, this is the kind of tool that keeps that simple.
Advanced Module Manager by Regular Labs (formerly NoNumber)
Out of the box, Joomla lets you assign modules to menu items. Advanced Module Manager by Regular Labs (formerly NoNumber) opens that up to categories, dates, users, devices, templates, URLs, and more. Want a callout that only appears on phones, or a notice that runs for one weekend and then stops? This is the tool that turns those small, specific requests into quick work instead of custom code.
Admin Tools by Akeeba
Admin Tools is the security and housekeeping pick we added since 2013, and it has earned its place. The free Core covers useful basics like an emergency offline switch and administrator directory protection, while the Professional edition adds the web application firewall, a PHP file change scanner, and server configuration tools. To be clear, Admin Tools is not your backup. Backups are a separate job, handled by tools such as Akeeba Backup, and every care plan still needs both pieces in place.
AcyMailing by Acyba
A good site should keep talking to its people after they leave, and AcyMailing is the newsletter pick we trust for that job. It runs subscriber lists, a drag-and-drop email editor, and scheduled or automated campaigns right from Joomla, with statistics on opens and clicks so you can see what readers actually did. Welcome messages, follow-ups, and bounce handling help keep a list healthy without a separate email platform to wrestle. For churches, shops, and membership groups that send regular news, it keeps the whole conversation in one place.
HikaShop by Hikari Software
When a Joomla site needs to sell, HikaShop is the e-commerce pick that grows with the shop. It handles products, variants, prices, taxes, coupons, shipping, and payment plugins, from a small starter catalog to a fuller business store. Orders, customers, and email notices stay manageable in the back end, and custom fields let the checkout ask for the details a particular business really needs. It is a practical way to add a store without leaving Joomla behind.
Community Builder and CB Subscriptions by Joomlapolis
Some sites are built around people, not just pages, and that is where Community Builder earns its keep. It adds customizable profiles, fields, registration, user lists, and connections, turning plain Joomla users into a real community. Its paid add-on, CB Subscriptions (often called CBSubs), layers membership on top: subscription plans with durations and prices, payment gateways, coupons and reminders, and access control that protects content and profile areas until the right plan is active. Together they suit membership groups, teams, and communities that need sign-ups and paid access handled in one system.
A YOOtheme toolkit: Pro, Widgetkit, ZOO, and ZOOlanders
Some of our favorite tools now come as a family, so we are listing them together.
YOOtheme Pro is the design framework underneath: a visual builder and style system that lets us lay out pages, templates, and dynamic content without starting from a blank file every time. It is the piece that makes a site feel designed, not just assembled.
Widgetkit is the showcase toolkit that takes the place of RokSprocket on our old list. Slideshows, galleries, sliders, grids, accordions, and parallax sections live here, ready to drop into a page. If a client wants a portfolio, a photo story, or a set of featured items to move and breathe a little, Widgetkit is usually where we start.
ZOO is the content builder for work that outgrows plain articles. Product catalogs, directories, download libraries, and other structured listings get their own content types and fields, so each entry is consistent and easy to filter, sort, and reuse. Managed in ZOO and designed with YOOtheme Pro, that content can appear in polished layouts across the site.
ZOOlanders Essentials for ZOO is the add-on pack that stretches ZOO further, with stronger related-items handling, media and download elements, advanced front-end filtering, and multilingual helpers. We reach for it on ZOO projects that need those extra gears. It is a specialist pick, and a welcome one when the project calls for it.
The short version
Good extensions do not make a website by themselves, but the right short list makes building and caring for one far more pleasant. Start with an editor people enjoy using, keep search and security basics covered, control your modules with intent, and choose a design system that can grow with the content. That is still our favorite combination, all these years later. If your Joomla site could use a refresh, we would be glad to talk through which of these would help you most.
