Are you marketing via e-mail like a rookie?

Updated for 2026: we first wrote this in 2011. The tech has changed, so we brought it up to date.

We help organizations set up email marketing services like Mailchimp and Constant Contact. We even help some develop and maintain campaigns. E-mail marketing used to be a load and fire kind of activity, but things have changed over the years from a legal and technical standpoint. So how do you keep up?

The CAN-SPAM Act has been around since 2004. According to the FTC, each separate email that breaks it can bring a penalty of up to $53,088, yet many businesses still send email every day that isn't compliant. And if you send a lot of email to Gmail users, Google's sender guidelines add their own rules, like easy one-click unsubscribe for marketing mail.

But avoiding penalty is the very base level of e-mail marketing. It should generate business for you, shouldn't it?

Rather than using trial and error, check out Mailchimp's free resources library. It has a wide selection of guides that can move you from rookie to expert.

Oh, and rather than being on pins and needles about what you may be doing wrong, use a reputable email service that builds in unsubscribe links and list management, so you can focus on strategies that grow your business. Want help? See our Marketing services.
