Is My Website Slow? Common Causes and Fixes

A slow website frustrates visitors, and they may leave before the page loads. Speed can also affect how your site does in search. Here are the usual causes and what to do about them.

First, measure it

  • Test a few key pages (not just the home page) with a free tool like Google PageSpeed Insights.
  • Test on a phone as well as a computer.
  • Write down the results so you can compare after making changes.

Scores move around between tests, so look at trends and the specific issues the tool lists.

Common causes and fixes

Large images

This is the most common one. Photos straight from a camera or phone are often much bigger than needed.

Fix: resize images to the size they display, use JPEG or WebP for photos, and turn on lazy loading. See images in Joomla or images in WordPress.

Too many add-ons

Every Joomla extension or WordPress plugin can add code, files, and database work to each page.

Fix: remove ones you don't use, and replace heavy ones with lighter options where you can.

No caching

Without caching, the server builds every page from scratch on every visit.

Fix: turn on caching. Joomla has built-in caching under System > Global Configuration > System and a System - Page Cache plugin. WordPress usually relies on your host or a caching plugin. Clear the cache after making changes.

Hosting

Cheap shared hosting can be slow, especially when other sites on the same server are busy.

Fix: look at your host's plan, server location, and PHP version. Upgrading hosting can make a big difference.

Outdated software

Old versions of PHP, Joomla, WordPress, and add-ons are often slower.

Fix: keep everything updated. See Why Updates Matter (and What Boutique Hosting Covers).

Third-party scripts

Chat widgets, social feeds, embedded videos, maps, and tracking codes all load from other servers.

Fix: keep only the ones you need, and load videos and maps only when someone clicks.

Fonts

Several font families or weights add up.

Fix: use fewer fonts and weights, or system fonts.

Database clutter

Old revisions, spam, and leftover data from removed add-ons can slow things down.

Fix: clean up regularly, with a backup first.

When it's not your site

If the whole site is suddenly slow or down, it may be a hosting issue or even a hack. See My Website Was Hacked: What to Do Right Now if you're seeing anything odd.
