What Affects the Cost and Timeline of a Website Project
"How much will it cost and how long will it take?" is the first question almost everyone asks. The answer depends on a handful of things. Here's what they are, so you can plan and compare quotes on equal terms.
What affects the cost
Number and type of pages. A site with a few standard pages is a different job than one with dozens of unique layouts. Repeating page types (like service pages that share a layout) are more efficient than one-off designs.
Content. Who writes the copy, takes the photos, and moves old content over? Content you provide ready to go costs less than content that needs writing, editing, or moving page by page.
Design approach. A custom design built around your brand takes more time than adapting an existing template.
Features. Online stores, booking, member logins, directories, multilingual content, and custom forms all add work.
Integrations. Connecting the site to your CRM, payment provider, email marketing, or other business systems adds setup and testing.
Accessibility and SEO. Building to accessibility standards and planning redirects and search basics take time, and they're worth it.
Platform and add-ons. Some features need paid add-ons with yearly renewals.
Ongoing costs. Hosting, domain renewals, updates, backups, security, and support continue after launch. Plan for them in your budget, not just the build.
What affects the timeline
- Content readiness. This is the biggest one. Projects move quickly when content is ready and slow down when it isn't.
- Decision-making. Fewer people signing off means faster reviews. Name one main contact if you can.
- Feedback rounds. Quick, combined feedback keeps things moving.
- Scope changes. Adding features mid-project pushes the date out.
- Third parties. Waiting on a payment provider, a vendor, or domain access can hold things up.
- Launch date pressure. If you have a hard deadline, say so at the start so the plan can be built around it.
How to plan for both
- Write down your goals and must-have features.
- Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves, and be open to a phased launch.
- Start gathering content now.
- Share your budget range and deadline early. It helps us recommend the right approach.
- Include ongoing care in your planning.
