How to Add a Blog Post in WordPress

Using Joomla instead? See How to Add a Blog Post or News Item in Joomla.

In WordPress, blog posts are Posts (not Pages). Here's how to add one in the block editor in WordPress 6.x and later.

1. Start a new post

  1. Log in at yoursite.com/wp-admin.
  2. Go to Posts > Add New Post (labeled Add New in some versions).

2. Add a title and content

  • Click Add title and type your headline.
  • Click below the title and start writing. Each paragraph is a block. Click + to add headings, images, lists, and more.

For editor basics, see How to Edit a Page or Post in WordPress (Block Editor).

3. Set categories and tags

Open the settings sidebar (the icon at top right) and choose the Post tab.

  • Categories: tick the category the post belongs in, or click Add New Category.
  • Tags: type tags and press Enter. Optional.

4. Add a featured image

In the Post tab, click Set featured image (or the featured image area), then upload or pick an image from the Media Library. Your theme decides where it shows, often at the top of the post and on your blog page.

Add alt text in the Media Library. See How to Add, Resize, and Caption Images in WordPress (with Alt Text).

5. Check the URL and excerpt

  • Link or URL in the Post tab: WordPress creates it from the title. Shorten it if it's long.
  • Excerpt: an optional short summary. Some themes show it on the blog page.

6. Publish now or schedule it

  1. Click Publish at the top right.
  2. In the panel that opens, click the date next to Publish (it says Immediately) to pick a future date and time.
  3. Click Publish (or Schedule if you set a future date).

To keep working on it later, click Save draft instead.

SEO title and meta description

WordPress doesn't include fields for these. If your site has an SEO plugin, you'll set them in its panel. See How to Change a Page's SEO Title and Meta Description in WordPress.
