Technology Moves On, and So Do We

Brent Laminack March 28, 2012 Categories // Spring 2012

As all of you know, new software releases for your desktop and laptop happen all the time, with major upgrades to Windows or OS/X every couple of years. Joomla 2.5 is a major release for us, but there are underlying technologies that are getting upgrades as well. One of these is the programming language that Joomla's written in: PHP. All our servers are currently running PHP 5.2. The current version is 5.3, and 5.4 has just been released. Some of the extensions are complaining that they need at least PHP 5.3. We plan on upgrading our servers to PHP 5.3 in the near future. The only fly in the ointment is that the dozen or so Joomla 1.0 sites we still host won't run on PHP 5.3. So how will we handle them? We'll have to leave the Joomla 1.0 sites on an older server running PHP 5.2. What does this mean for you, our clients? If you're running Joomla 1.5 or 2.5, we'll be moving you at no charge to a better, more modern hosting structure that will provide more current releases of the underlying technology. If you're running Joomla 1.0, it means that in order to pay for the separate server to continue running your software, we're going to have to raise your monthly hosting fees later this year.
